Dental Tourism in Pakistan: A Lahore Guide for International Patients

What treatment in Lahore really costs against US and UK prices, what genuinely fits a two-week trip, and the parts most clinic websites leave out: visas, flying home, and who looks after you once you land.

Sterilised dental instruments at a Lahore clinic treating dental tourism patients from the UK and US

Dental tourism in Pakistan means flying here for treatment that usually costs 70–85% less than the same work done privately in the US or UK, most often veneers, crowns, smile makeovers, root canals and implants. Cost is the reason almost everyone comes. A 2025 British Dental Journal analysis of UK press coverage found exactly that pattern: price and long NHS waits push people abroad, while quality and follow-up care are what they underestimate. I'd add one thing from twelve years of doing this work in Lahore. The patients who do well are the ones who planned the trip around the dentistry, not the dentistry around the trip.

Is dental tourism in Pakistan actually worth it?

That depends far more on what you need done than on where you're flying from. For a single crown, no. The flight costs more than you save. For eight veneers, a full arch of implants, or a mouth that needs rebuilding, the maths changes completely, and it changes fast.

Here's what the work costs at our clinic, converted at roughly PKR 279 to the dollar and PKR 372 to the pound, against what the same treatment commonly costs privately at home.

Treatment At Dental Specialists (PKR) ≈ USD ≈ GBP Commonly quoted privately in the US / UK
Single implant with crown 150,000–380,000 $540–$1,360 £400–£1,020 US: about $3,000–$6,000 · UK: about £1,400–£3,500
All-on-4, per arch 650,000–1,500,000 $2,330–$5,380 £1,750–£4,030 US: about $18,000–$35,000 · UK: about £12,500–£15,000
Porcelain veneer (layered), per tooth from 75,000 from $270 from £200 US: about $900–$2,500 · UK: about £700–£1,500
Smile makeover, 10 units (crowns + veneers) from 500,000 from $1,790 from £1,340 US: about $9,000–$25,000 · UK: about £5,600–£15,000 (8–10 porcelain veneers)
Root canal, single tooth (crown extra) 18,000–45,000 $65–$160 £50–£120 US: about $700–$1,600

Prices are indicative ranges at Dental Specialists, DHA Phase 6, Lahore, current as of July 2026. Your exact treatment plan and cost are confirmed after clinical examination. Prices may change without notice. USD and GBP figures are approximate and vary with the exchange rate. Home-country figures are widely reported private ranges, not quotes.

Two things in that table need saying plainly. At Dental Specialists in DHA Phase 6, Lahore, a single implant with crown ranges PKR 150,000–380,000, and that price includes bone grafting where the site needs it, which is often the line item that quietly doubles an implant quote elsewhere. The spread inside each range is real, not padding: an Aizen fixture and a Straumann fixture are not the same product, and we don't pretend otherwise. If you want the breakdown behind these numbers, we've written it out in full in our guide to dental implant cost in Pakistan, and the country-by-country version in dental implants in Pakistan vs the USA and UK.

Now the honest part. A saving of several thousand pounds only counts if the work lasts. The British Dental Association surveyed its members in 2022 and the great majority reported having treated patients who developed complications after travelling abroad, with crowns and implants topping the list, and repair bills that frequently ran past £1,000. That figure isn't an argument against travelling. It's an argument against choosing on price alone, which is a different thing entirely.

What fits a two-week trip, and what doesn't

This is where dental tourism marketing does the most damage, so let's be specific.

Work that genuinely finishes inside one visit of ten to fifteen days: teeth whitening (one appointment), composite bonding, scaling and polishing, fillings, root canal treatment, crowns and bridges, veneers, and a full ten-unit smile makeover across two or three appointments. Our veneer cases run roughly ten to fourteen days from preparation to final bonding, because the lab work and the try-in stage can't be rushed without the result showing it. Published survey data on dental tourists puts the average stay at around fifteen days, which matches what we see.

Work that does not finish in one trip, whatever anyone tells you: a conventional dental implant. The fixture is left load-free for roughly three to six months while bone grows onto its surface, and only then does the permanent crown go on. That protocol goes back to Brånemark's original work in the 1970s and it remains the default for good reason.

What about "teeth in a day"? The phrase is real but it's routinely misread. Immediate loading means a temporary tooth goes on at surgery so you're not walking around with a gap. It does not mean the case is finished. It also isn't for everyone: it needs enough bone and enough primary stability, and that's a judgement made from a CT scan and a torque reading in theatre, not from a WhatsApp message six weeks earlier. A Cochrane review comparing immediate, early and conventional loading found no convincing evidence of a clinically important difference in failure rates between them, while rating the quality of that evidence as very low. Translated: sometimes it works well, the science hasn't settled, and a clinic promising you a finished implant in fourteen days is selling certainty it doesn't have.

A sinus lift is its own category. It adds months, and it changes your flight plans, which I'll come back to.

Start before you fly: the virtual consultation

Send photographs and any X-rays you have on WhatsApp before you book anything. I review them personally and come back with a treatment plan, a cost range, and the number of appointments it needs. Sometimes the answer is that your case doesn't fit the trip you've described, and it's much cheaper to hear that now than at an airport. Bring your records with you either way: notes, radiographs, and a list of any medication you take.

Getting in: visas, NICOP and paperwork

Pakistan's entry rules moved twice in eighteen months, so treat anything you read online, including this paragraph, as a starting point rather than gospel. The one source that counts is the government's own portal.

For foreign nationals: the free Visa Prior to Arrival scheme that ran from August 2024 was withdrawn on 1 January 2026, and applications went back to the standard paid e-Visa through the Pakistan Online Visa System at visa.nadra.gov.pk. Reported processing times since then have run to about a week, sometimes longer, and the form asks for proof of accommodation. Apply three weeks before you fly, not three days. Ministers announced a wider online-visa expansion in early 2026, which tells you the policy is still moving.

For overseas Pakistanis on a foreign passport: a valid NICOP still gets you in without a visa. What changed in July 2026 is enforcement. The FIA instructed airlines to check NICOP validity at the gate, and passengers whose card has expired or been cancelled now need a Pakistani visa or a Pakistani passport before they board. Government spokespeople have been clear that nobody with a valid NICOP is affected, and equally clear that no exceptions are being made for anyone without one. Check your expiry date today, not the week you fly. Renewals are not instant.

One quiet piece of due diligence worth doing from your sofa: every dentist practising in Pakistan must be registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and the PMDC keeps a public register you can search by name or registration number. It takes two minutes. If a clinic hesitates when you ask who will actually be holding the handpiece, that hesitation is your answer. We've set out the rest of the checks in our guide on how to choose the best dentist in Lahore.

Flying home safely after dental work

Cabins are pressurised, not sea-level. Gas trapped in a sinus or under a fresh restoration expands and contracts as you climb and descend, and it can hurt a great deal. Dentists have a name for the tooth version, barodontalgia, and a 2023 British Dental Journal paper written specifically for dental tourists put numbers on how long to wait.

ProcedureEarliest suggested time before flying
Filling or other restorative work24 hours
Simple extraction24–48 hours
Root canal (non-surgical)72 hours
Surgical extraction, e.g. wisdom tooth72 hours
Uncomplicated implant placement72 hours
Sinus lift or bone graftTwo weeks minimum

Adapted from Felkai et al., British Dental Journal (2023). These intervals assume no pain, swelling or bleeding at the site. A week is the authors' general preference where the schedule allows. Your own dentist's advice comes first.

Look at that last row again. If your plan includes a sinus lift and your flight home is on day three, you don't have a plan. Barosinusitis after a sinus lift isn't only painful, it can undermine the procedure itself. This is exactly why the treatment sequence gets built around the return flight rather than the other way round, and it's the single most common thing I have to redesign when someone sends me an itinerary they've already paid for. The same paper notes that the evidence base here leans heavily on studies of military aircrew, so the intervals are sensible guidance rather than hard law.

Aftercare once you're back home

This is the part the glossy pages skip, and it's the part that decides whether the saving was real.

Your dentist at home is under no obligation to take over another clinic's work, and many decline, sometimes because they can't source a matching implant component and sometimes because they can't establish what was done. The UK's NHS treatment-abroad checklist and the General Dental Council's guidance both press the same point: know before you go how follow-up will happen, and understand that regulators at home have no jurisdiction over a dentist abroad. If a crown needs an adjustment in March and you're in Manchester, someone has to do it.

So ask directly, of us or of anyone else. Who reviews the case at six months? What's covered if a veneer debonds, and for how long? Will I leave with my radiographs, my treatment notes, the implant brand and lot number, and the crown material in writing? A clinic that answers those four questions cleanly is a clinic that expects to hear from you again. We handle adjustments and reviews remotely where it's possible and honestly, and in person when it isn't, and we say which is which before you commit.

What we won't do is guarantee an outcome. Nobody can. Biology varies, bone varies, and a small percentage of implants fail in the best hands in the world.

If you're an overseas Pakistani visiting family

You're the group this works best for, and it isn't close. You were coming anyway. The flight is a sunk cost, you're staying three or four weeks at a relative's house rather than a hotel, and you speak the language. Every objection that makes dental tourism awkward for a first-time visitor mostly evaporates.

The pattern we see every summer is families arriving in June and July, and someone realising in the second week that they should have booked. Two weeks is enough for veneers, and it is not enough if you spend the first ten days at weddings. Message us before you land and we'll hold appointments.

For a first visit home in years, the sensible starting point is a look at what's actually there. Our Homecoming Dental Check covers an exam, X-rays, and scaling and polishing for PKR 15,000 flat, and it's built precisely for this. If a smile makeover is the plan, the Smile Makeover Package runs from PKR 549,000 for ten E-max veneers with whitening across ten to fifteen days and two to three visits. Both sit alongside our other clinic packages, and the per-tooth arithmetic behind veneer pricing is laid out in our guide to veneers price in Pakistan. Flexible payment options are available on select treatments, and our team can talk you through them at consultation.

One last thing for this group, because it catches people out annually: your NICOP. See the section above.

The question worth asking before you book a flight

Not "how much will I save?" Ask instead: if this needs adjusting eight months from now, what happens? A clinic that has a real answer is worth flying to, and one that changes the subject has told you everything you need to know. You can see how we work with overseas patients on our international patients page, or just send the X-rays and let's find out whether your case fits your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is dental treatment in Pakistan safe?

It can be, and the safety depends on the clinic rather than the country. Every dentist practising in Pakistan must be registered with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, and the PMDC register is searchable online by name or registration number. Check registration, sterilisation protocols, and who will actually treat you before you book.

How long do I need to stay in Lahore for dental treatment?

Most cosmetic and restorative work fits a 10 to 15 day stay with two or three appointments. Whitening and bonding need one visit. Veneers, crowns and a full smile makeover usually need about two weeks. Conventional implants need a healing period and generally do not finish in one trip.

Can dental implants be finished in one trip to Pakistan?

Usually not. A conventional implant is left load-free for roughly three to six months so bone can integrate with it before the final crown goes on. Some cases suit immediate loading with a temporary tooth, but that is decided after examination and scans, never promised in advance.

Do I need a visa to visit Pakistan for dental treatment?

Most foreign nationals do. Pakistan's visa rules changed in 2026 and applications now go through the official NADRA portal at visa.nadra.gov.pk, with processing taking several days. Overseas Pakistanis on a foreign passport can enter without a visa if their NICOP is valid and current.

How soon can I fly home after dental work?

Published guidance suggests roughly 24 hours after a filling, 24 to 48 hours after a simple extraction, and about 72 hours after implant placement, surgical extraction or a root canal. After a sinus lift, at least two weeks. Book your return flight with that gap built in.

What happens if something goes wrong after I get home?

Your home dentist is not obliged to correct another clinic's work, and dentists abroad have reported that repairs can cost more than the original treatment. Ask before you travel who handles adjustments, get copies of all records and X-rays, and keep a direct line to your treating dentist.
